Dessert for the Blind

It's been a little while since I've been on a date.

Tonight, Andy, Jamie, Leesa, Josh and I are going to Ravinia. That's two couples, engaged and married, respectively, and then me.

Awkward?

Could be.

But wait! Andy, being the amazing friend that he is, decided he would bring his friend Sara(h) so we could meet. What a great guy.

We're going to Ravinia, where they have concerts each week. This week it's Punch Brothers and we'll watch them, or at least hear them, from the blessedly humid grass that surrounds the amphitheater.

We'll also be picnicking. I was charged with dessert. What the heck do I make for dessert for a picnic? On top of that, I, being a guy, must impress this girl I've never met with my domestic skills.

I called my sister, hoping she would have some advice. She did, in the form of Summer Berry Shortcakes. I headed out to the store, bought the ingredients, and after 2 hours in the kitchen, the results looked amazing. They are now my Facebook profile shot. I'd put it up on my blog, but the network isn't letting me. But trust me.

It's amazing!

The Last Mimzy

= worst movie ever.

It was on HBO. It was horrible. I don't think I've ever seen a movie with such a bad plot, acting, scripting, and ending, all in one.

Never, ever, ever watch The Last Mimzy.

Regional Hits

It has recently come to my attention that no one up north has ever heard the phrase,

"Punch Buggy *color*, no punch backs!"

Yeah. I grew up giving and getting massive bruises at the sound of that cry. It's what one would yell when he sees an old-school VW Beetle.

If you're from the North, you may be thinking, "You mean a 'slug bug?'"

Maybe it's just because of my upbringing, but I think slug bug sounds lame. Yep, lame. I don't even need to defend it.

Lame.

So, if I punch you, and say, "Punch Buggy blue, no punch backs!" don't be alarmed.

And no punch backs.

Fruit Flies

I've been eating some grapes. Yummy, purple grapes.

Mmmm.

Grapes.

I got up to play the piano a bit, and when I came back, I saw a fruit fly. I thought to myself, "How do fruit flies always find the fruit?"

Then it hit me.

What if they're in the fruit??

I decided I'd better eat it all quickly. Then they will all die a horrible death. Or, if nothing else, I'll keep other flies from finding it.

Mature Fruit

Bananas are the only fruit to reach adulthood, because they grow up.

Carrots

There they were, and still are: frozen.

My carrots. They never saw it coming. My teeth are ice picks, freeing my vegetable friends from their hydroxynate captor. Frozen carrots: good for eyes, bad for teeth.

Somehow the fridge got turned to ridiculously cold. I guess it's not the worst things. It counter-acts the way the water, at times, is only hot. Scalding hot. Like, "Oh, I'll make you a cup of tea right away because the water's already 'sue-McDonald's' hot."

I'll turn the temperature down. It says you have to wait 24 hours for the adjustment to fully take place. In the meantime I'll drop some carrots in a glass of hot water.

Then I can drink cold water, and not worry about breaking my teeth on the carrots.

The Best Way to Get Music Around

noisetrade.com

You can get really sweet albums. Free.

FREE.

All you have to do is tell other people. I think this was Derek Webb's idea. Whoever's it was, that person is pretty much a genius. And if you don't want to tell anyone? Pay a small amount and get music anyway.

It's freaking genius.

"So, Dan, why don't you have a Noise Trade account set up?"

Because it costs $250. Granted, that's for 20,000 downloads of your album, but I am not in a place to do that. So, until then, enjoy other people's music, and have others enjoy it, too. And if you like my music, send them to myspace.com/danlugo.

O Sacred Song

If you haven't yet, go listen to Audrey Assad.

She's got a download up (maybe today only) that is the old hymn "O Sacred Head". No matter your musical taste, I think you will love it. The harmonies are gorgeous and it's all done a capella ("with ice cream on top").

In other news, I'll be playing a song I wrote ("Quiet Until Now") at church on Sunday. Sweet! I haven't led anything or done anything like this at this church, so I'm excited. I guess if no one knows you're a songwriter no one'll expect you to play songs, eh?

Notable Quotables

Last night I took my first trip ever to the Taste of Chicago!

It was stellar. And it was July 3rd, which means there were fireworks. And while the Altamonte Springs, FL light show is impressive, the Chicago one is fan-freakin'-tastic. There's music by the Grant Park Orchestra, and like, a million people. Literally.

There's bad things and good things about a million people being in a 4 block radius:

Bad: There was a shooting a mere 2 blocks from where we were waiting for the el.

Good: You hear some interesting things.

1. While walking out of Grant Park, with the streets looking like literal rivers of people, I heard, "We look like a bunch of Jews leaving Egypt."

2. On the more racy side, one younger guy was heard saying, "All white people, form a line." At least one person was very offended by that.

3. "I wish I had a light saber. Then I could kill all those black people!"

Now, that last one might sound incredibly racist, but here's the situation. First, I knew the girl. Second, she meant white people. Third, she really meant storm troopers.

Next Independence Day, be sure to watch what comes fourth from your mouth.

Moving Out

My room is empty.

Well, almost.

Aside from the upsot dresser, there is nothing in my room. It is back to its original condition of when I moved in. You know what that means? I get my whole deposit back!

Okay, half my deposit. I'm moving into an apartment upstairs. You see, Andy's getting married in a month, so he's over in the new place and I'm up with John, Steve and Will. So, that room has the other half of my deposit. (Awesomely enough, since rent costs considerably less when you have 4 people rather than 2, the deposit is less, so I only payed like $80 for rent this month. Sweeeeet. That extra cash? It's going to the Cards.)

It is actually sad that Andy and I won't be living together anymore. It really was a great situation. It's good to know a person in a way that the rest of the world doesn't see: the way they are at home. And it's good to have someone know you in that way. It makes all sorts of conversations easier. You just understand one another better. (Though we still can't tell when the other is being sarcastic, which is a constant cause for laughter.)

Thus begins another roommate adventure. We'll see how it pans out. I'll have three other people helping me find out what my random living quirks are. Greeeeaaaat. But that's okay. If nothing else, there's one three-letter word that will make everything okay.

Wii.
