Five Dreams

Last night I slept for a ridiculously unnecessary 11 hours. In those 11 hours I had 5 dreams.

1. Noah/Evan/Dan and the Ark - For some reason, God saw it fitting to commission another ark to be built. And it was glorious. And it moved, but there was no rain, because God had promised he would never again flood the earth. It was amazing. I was astounded at the work of God.

2. Caleb (whose birthday is today) had bought three containers of black shoe polish. I was like, "Hey, I needed shoe polish. Can I get one from you?" I figured he didn't need three, but the three pack made the purchase enticing.

3. Megaphone. All I remember was someone was talking into a megaphone, and it sounded sweet.

4. I was riding my bike (that I don't own) through New York. I had to ride a different route because of an accident, and traffic was backed up for what seemed like eternity. So, I went a back way, ran up some stairs, and went through a door, the wrong door. Crazily enough, the wrong door was Lauren's apartment, and all her friends were there. The guys were getting haircuts like Martin Luther. They were all nice people, and the apartment was lovely.

5. I was buying a laptop off someone for $100. It was a great deal, but the longer the dream went on, the crappier the computer got. By the end, I was pretty positive I didn't want it, but moments earlier I had been really stoked!

I have dreams like this almost every night, but usually not FIVE.

What's one of your crazy dreams?

Lycopene

Today I found out that my Heinz tomato ketchup is rich in Lycopene. In fact, it's a great source!

For those who don't know, Lycopene is an anti-oxidant.

Um... okay...

I've heard the word "anti-oxidant", but I'm not sure what it is. I bet I could figure it out though.

Oxidation occurs when oxygen hits a metallic element, hence, rust.

An anti-oxidant must work against oxidation.

So, we may deduce that Heinz ketchup keeps your stomach from rusting.

Thank God for Lycopene!

How would you respond?

If your friend was giving up, how would you respond?

Like, giving up on life?

What would you do? I have a friend that's in that situation. I want to be encouraging, but after years, it's hard to keep doing that. I believe things can get better, but I feel like I can't be telling the whole truth if things haven't gotten better in a long time.

One can only be optomistic for another person for so long. I guess I will have to hope/pray for a returned optimism, because a change in attitude can change a lot.

At least I hope so.

Ben Folds - Way to Normal

If you haven't yet, check out Ben Folds's Way to Normal album. It's delicious.

If nothing else, go to the site and listen to "You Don't Know Me". It features Regina Spektor, and I can't help but bob my head back and forth the whole time.

Beer and America

This was shared by my friend Anna. It made me giggle.

"If you had purchased $1,000 worth of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you would have $49.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 worth of shares in AIG one year ago, you have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 worth of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you would have $0.00 today. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you would have received $214.00. Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg plan.

"A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year.
That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon! Makes you proud to be an American!"

Creatures of Habit

I just walked into the bathroom, flipped on the switch (thus turning on the lights), and then turned on the lamp in the bathroom.

Why did I turn on the lamp??

Our bathroom light has been out for 2 weeks. In the meantime we have had a lamp in the bathroom. So, I would normally walk in, flip on the switch (out of habit) and then turn on the lamp so that I could actually see. Now, the light works, but I still flip on the light (not expecting it to work), and proceed to turn on the lamp. Why??

We are creatures of habit, it's true. We like familiarity and patterns and constancy. But in the spirit of ridiculous challenges, here is a ridiculous challenge:

Do three things out of habit today.

For instance:
- Brush your teeth left-handed.
- Put pants on both legs at a time.
- Call your parents, even though it's not Sunday.
- Walk down the stairs backwards.
- Say hi to your neighbor.

Then, update me on how that went.

Ready... go.

The Truth is in the Lyric

Guess that you heard someone say,
"If you don't expect too much, you won't be disappointed,"
But if you don't expect enough, you might not be surprised.
And if you don't expect at all, you're telling that the point is:
Don't expect to live your life

(That's the chorus of a song I'm working on.)

Yesterday at work we were having a raffle which cost a dollar to enter. One co-worker, "Susanna," wasn't going to enter because, "I never win."

I said something to the effect of, "I just wrote a song about having to expect something sometimes, so you should enter because you never know what could happen."

So she ended up entering the raffle.

And she won.

Moral: If you don't expect at all, you won't have the chance to be surprised.

Registered

It was raining. I was hungry. I was tired. I didn't really care.

But I went.

And I registered to vote.

This being the last day to register, I had to at least try. So, hoping to make it on time, I headed over to the Lombard Village Hall. They asked for an ID. Conveniently, I had my driver's license... from Florida. So they asked for something else. I ran to my car and found a receipt from Sears Auto Center with my current address. "That'll do," I thought.

It did.

Ideally, I would have liked to vote in Florida, where votes matter. But I guess I'll settle for voting in Illinois, because then I can at least do my civic duty.

I have no idea who I'm voting for, really. I'm a little disenchanted with politics in general. But I guess a little blind hope never hurt anyone. So, on November 4, I'll go out and vote with everyone else.

What're your thoughts on voting?

Pita Chips and Marketing

I am so happy right now.

I was driving to meet up with Matt, a chap helping with marketing LHC, when I got a crazy craving for Austin Coffee's pita chips and hummus. The craving overwhelmed me. I even had to text Chris Hall to let him know about it.

Mmmm.... pita chips and hummus.

Upon arriving at my destination to meet Matt, I learned that this coffee shop (Panini Xpresso) has pita chips and hummus, too! Holy cow! I had no idea. I mean, there's no Jackie or Trey or Jeff or anyone, but it'll do.

Now, Matt and I will be able to chat and enjoy pita chips and hummus.

I am so happy right now.
